Eighty years ago, on a night cloaked in secrecy, Allied forces launched the audacious mission that would change the course of history: D-Day. To honor the 80th anniversary, we embark on a special flight, piloting DC-3s and C-47s to recreate the journey of Mission Albany.
Our story begins in Exeter EGTE, where we will take off just as the brave aircrews did in 1944. From there, we'll overfly RAF Uppottery, one of the many launch points for the airborne divisions. As we navigate towards Normandy following the actual routes taken on the night, we'll immerse ourselves in the strategy of Operation Overlord. We'll learn about the deception of Operation Fortitude, which misled the Germans about the invasion's true location, and the crucial weather report made from a small post office in Country Mayo, Ireland, and how it impacted on the entire operation.
We will also learn about the advanced Eureka and Rebecca navigation systems and delve into the heroic actions of Easy Company of the 101st Airbone Division, who overcame tremendous odds to secure vital positions and pave the way for the Allied advance. We'll also remember the relentless efforts of the resupply missions that kept the front lines fortified and ready for battle.
Our journey continues with a simulated paratroop drop over Drop Zone C, complete with custom scenery by @Jeppeson2001 that will provide an insight into the intense resistance of the German defenders. This mission isn't just about flying, it's about stepping back in time to experience the courage, strategy, and determination that defined D-Day.
