Seamus' Special Song

You could hear the engine's roar as he flew along the shore, And the whirring of the propeller as it cut through skies galore. And he swooped into the island, his parcels tightly bound, His name was Seamus, and he flew the fastest plane around.

Now Seamus loved a maiden, a lass known as Maeve, She lived alone on Inishmore, down by the ocean's wave. They said she was too grand for him, too fair and far too fine, But Seamus brought her letters there each week at half-past nine. They called him Seamus, (Seamusssssss) And he flew the fastest plane around.

She said she’d like some perfume from Paris or Milan, He said, “Alright, mavourneen,” as he took her by the hand. He said, “Shall I bring it fresh and fine, straight from the West?,” She said, “Seamus, just get here soon, that’s what I love best.” That pleased old Seamus, (Seamusssssss) And he flew the fastest plane around.

Now Seamus had a rival, a pilot bold and sly, Called Two-Wing Ted from Tullamore, who soared the same blue sky. He tempted her with silks and gems and treasures from afar, And when she saw his golden rings, it nearly broke her heart. She almost wept at his promises, said, “Treat me right, And you’ll have my love forever, every morning, every night.” He knew once she accepted, she’d be his to sway, But all Seamus had to offer was his letters every day. Poor Seamus, (Seamusssssss) And he flew the fastest plane around.

One evening Ted saw Seamus’ plane landing on the field, It drove him mad to see it there, as jealousy revealed. And as he stormed towards the craft, with anger in his stride, He slashed the tires with a grin, and Seamus couldn’t fly. His plane was grounded, (groundedddddd) And he flew the fastest plane around.

Now Seamus rushed out to the plane, his love note in his hand, He said, “If you want Maeve’s heart, you’ll fight me like a man.” “Oh, why not race for her?” Ted sneeringly replied, “And just to make it thrilling, let’s wager a euro on the side.” Now Seamus dragged him to the field, beneath the evening sun, They stood there face to face, and Ted went for his gun. But Seamus was too quick, things didn’t go Ted’s way, And a well-aimed propeller blade sent it spinning far from hand. Now Maeve ran to stop them, to keep them apart, But Seamus, he stepped aside and Ted’s strike caught him in the flight. And he looked up in pained surprise as his plane began to thrust, But Ted’s swift move brought Seamus down, and he crashed into the dust. Poor Seamus, (Seamusssssss) And he flew the fastest plane around.

Seamus was just thirty-two, he didn’t want to die, But now he soars above the clouds in that courier route in the sky. Where the passengers are angels and the sky is always clear, And the pilot’s life is filled with joy in that aerie, fairy sphere. But Maeve’s heart was broken, though she married Ted with pride, But strange things happened on their honeymoon as she stood by Ted’s side. Was that the wind a-whistling? Or the buzzing of a plane? Or Seamus’ ghostly engine calling out her name? They won’t forget Seamus, (Seamusssssss) And he flew the fastest plane around.
