High Mountain Rescue

The Chilean Government has issued an Emergency alert.

The town of Ollagüe in Chile on the border of Bolivia has been cut off. Recent heavy rains have caused landslides cutting the town off from the rail line and all local roads. Power is out in the area and the local population has gathered at the local airstrip. With its Generator, it is the only source of power in the area. But the airstrip has been damaged in the latest round of storms.

And now, to make matters worse, the Acuanquilcha Volcano has rumbled to life. Seismologists have determined based on the activity that an eruption could happen at any time. We need to get the town evacuated.

With the local airstrip being damaged, the only way is by Helicopter. A staging area has been setup at a nearby airport where the Helicopters can offload as they make ferry flights between the Town and the airport. From there, the townspeople can be evacuated to Diego Aracena International Airport where services are being dispatched to make accommodations for the evacuees.

This operation will be hampered by the elevation that both the town and the usable airstrip is at. The area is in mountain terrain and both landings are at over 12,000 feet.

Pilots will have to make their way through the terrain to get to the town while dealing with winds and weather.

We need to move quickly to get these people to safety. Before the Volcano decides to get too active and shutting down the possibility of air rescue.

(You can receive this achievement by doing either part of this flight. Yu have the option of Plane or Helicopter. You can do both, but will only receive the achievement once)

High Altitude Rescue - Helicopters

Helicopter Rescue will take off from Diego Aracena International Airport (SCDA) on the coast and make their way to Calama Airstrip (SCCZ). A Distance of about 120 Miles. From there, you will land, pick up as many people as you can, and make your way to Caposa Airport (SCKP) about 40 miles away. From there, the passengers will be transfered to planes and brought back to Diego Aracena.

The route if done direct will require you to fly over 17,000 feet to clear the mountains. You will have to pick your way through the terrain to find the best route and keep under the limits. It will take you longer, but its the only way.

Leg 1 - SCDA to SCCZ (About 120 miles) Leg 2 - SCCZ to SCKP (About 40 Miles)

High Altitude Rescue - Airplanes

Airplanes will be waiting at Caposa airport. The Helicopters have arrived, now load the evacuees up and then head back to Diego International to drop them off.

Due to the weather conditions in the area and the Elevation, we are suggesting using Caravans, Kodiaks, Twin Otters, or other Turbo Props or equivalent aircraft. These are VFR conditions, and although the runway at Caposa is long enough, it is in bad shape and cannot take a larger craft landing.

Be careful. Caposa is at about a 12,500 elevation, and the surrounding mountains are higher. Make your way through the valleys to find your way out and back to safety. If the volcano errupts, you will have only a short time to get to safety from the ash that will surely take out your engines.

Leg 3 - SCKP to SCDA (About 85 Miles)

You must do all three legs in order to be awarded this achievement.
