Adak is the westernmost city in the United States and the Southernmost in Alaska, located in the Andreanof Island Archipelago in the Aleutian National Maritime Wildlife Refuge. The city has a resident population of approximately 120 residents, with 40-100 transients or other visitors on the island at any given time.
Adak Island is approximately 1,200 nautical miles southwest of Anchorage and is accessible commercially only by air.
Alaska Airlines makes two flights a week to the island from Anchorage (PANC), the majority of the Adak's visitors come for caribou hunting or birding.
In 1892, a Pirate named Gregory Dwargstaf hid gold coins worth $365 million dollars in 150 food and milk tin cans, on the island of Adak. He was running away from US goverment officials and found the secluded island to be the best place to hide his treasure; unfortunately for him though, he died before he could come back to get it.
During World War II, the island was used as a base by America to attack Japan. During the construction of the base in 1943, a worker found a tin can with gold coins from the 1880s-90s which was worth thousands of dollars. Later on, in 1959, another can with $2.5 million dollars worth of gold was found by a Seabee while constructing drainage.
After the war was over, approximately 6,000 American military men who served on Adak during World War II recalled Adak's cold, foggy, windy weather; mud; Quonset huts; few women and no trees; and a volcano that from time to time would issue puffs of smoke and that fresh food was a rarity.
Adak Naval Air Station continued to be a military base during the Cold War but was designated a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) site in 1995 and closed in March 1997.
Shortly after, the town of Adak was incorporated at the site of the former base. Down from a peak population of 6,000, the island recorded a 2010 census population of 326 residents, all in the city of Adak, in the northern part of the island. In 1980, the Aleutian Islands National Wildlife Refuge was created and much of Adak Island lies within its boundaries.
